Car licence renewal notices now only via SMS and email
The Western Cape Department of Transport has informed the George Municipality Vehicle Licencing Department that car licence renewal notices will from now on only be available directly to the car owner via SMS or email.
While some owners may still have received printed-on-paper vehicle licence renewal notices in the post, the provincial department has recently indicated that printed notifications would no longer be issued – not via the Post Office nor from municipal traffic departments.
Instead, vehicle owners can register their profile at online.natis.gov.za for electronic motor vehicle licence renewal notices (also known as MVL2 notices) to be sent to them via SMS or email.
Owners are reminded that the vehicle licence expiry date is indicated at the bottom of their current vehicle licence disk and are advised to diarise their licence renewal time in advance to ensure timely renewal. Vehicle licences are valid for a year from the date of renewal. The owner has 21 days from the date of expiry on the disk to renew the license.
Please note that while renewal notices are available electronically, owners cannot currently renew and pay for CAW vehicle licences online and must do so in person at the George Vehicle Licencing office in Hibernia Street, next to the train station. The provincial department has not yet communicated to George Municipality regarding plans to make online car licence renewal services available here.
