FACTS ABOUT DISTRIBUTION OF FOOD PARCELS

FACTS ABOUT DISTRIBUTION OF FOOD PARCELS

Issued 28 April 2020, George Municipality

The George Municipality has been requested to assist the Western Cape Department of Social Development (DSD) with the process around the distribution of food parcels. George Municipality acts as a delivery agent only and passes on lists of requests for food parcels to the DSD. The information is verified by DSD who contacts potential beneficiaries on the lists and asks the applicants some questions to assess their situation at home.

If an applicant qualifies, the DSD social worker informs  the recipients that a package would be delivered within a certain time. DSD then sends a list back to the George Municipality and the DSD food parcels are delivered as per the list provided with a recipient having to present a valid identification document upon delivery and sign receipt thereof.

Please note that ONLY THE DSD MAKES THE DECISION whether a particular household receives a food parcel and that the George Municipality is ONLY THE DELIVERY AGENT.

The George Municipality is therefore not in a position to handle  disputes regarding the approval and delivery of these much-needed parcels and will report individuals or entities who attempt to influence, interfere or intimidate officials or recipients. The public is reminded that councillors are expected to adhere to the COVID-19 Regulations issued by the National Government as well as the provisions of the Protocol Guideline issued by the MEC for Local Government stipulating that they are not to interfere nor become involved in the matter of food parcels.

Currently should any Councillors need to submit names to help a household in need, they must contact DSD via the available CallCentre  channels or submit their lists to the Senior Manager at the Social Services department of George Municipality. The names received are forwarded to DSD for verification and screening. The contact details for Western Cape Department of Social Development (DSD) general queries for 0800 220 250; for donation requests and offers 0860 142 142; or send a Please Call Me to 079 769 1207, or email covid19donate@westerncape.gov.za

The George office of the Department Social Development can be contacted on 044 814 1920 during office hours.

George Municipality continues to expand on its existing soup kitchen programme as its primary feeding scheme during the Covid-19 crisis period. All dry food and fresh ingredients donated by the the public via it’s drive-through donation centre at the City Hall and Civic Center are distributed to the 137 municipal soup kitchens currently providing two meals a day in all vulnerable communities, that is 20 000 meals daily,  and councillors are encouraged to request their communities to make use of this service. The municipality continues to open more kitchens to provide food throughout the Covid-19 crisis.

FEITE OOR VERSPREIDING VAN VOEDSELPAKKE

Uitgegee 28 April 2020, George Munisipaliteit
