George Libraries ready for National Book 

Week from 4 – 9 September 2019

South Africa commemorates National Book Week in September and it an initiative of the South African Book Development Council (SABDC) in collaboration with the Department of Arts and Culture.

National Book Week is an important initiative in encouraging the nation to value reading as a fun and pleasurable activity and to showcase how reading can easily be incorporated into one’s daily lifestyle. The commemoration coincides with International Literacy Day on 8 September.

At George Library, 30 Afrikaans books that were donated by a library user, will be ready to be lent out by 4 September. According to Senior Librarian, Malibongwe Luyenge, they will have a discussion on September 7th at 10:30am in the foyer of the George library with writers and community members on non-fiction and fiction books.

George Library also plans a school visit for the younger library users, a library tour and book talk with the grade 3 learners from the George Preparatory School during the Book Week.

Born to Win creche will have a story hour at Blanco Library at 10am on September 4th. At Haarlem Library the staff are planning on reaching out to the community on different dates during the week. They will target senior citizens and the youth and will play games with them and have a story hour with the learners of Haarlem Senior Secondary School. Noll Library will celebrate by having a story hour at Noll Primary school at 10am on September 4th, while Pacaltsdorp Library will do an outreach to a local creches and Thembalethu Library will reach out to Mazisakhe home for the aged and have a story hour at 11am on September 3rd. Waboomskraal Library will have a spelling competition for grade 1 – 7 learners at the library every day at 10am from September 2nd until September 6th.
