George Municipality shines at Garden Route Better Together Games

George Municipality officials shone at the Garden Route Better Together Games and walked away with gold in four of the sport codes. This annual event is sponsored by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport. About 20 institutions including municipalities, government departments participated in the day. Johannes Tarentaal and John Muller from Civil Engineering Services, won gold in Domino’s, with the teams in Cricket and Touch rugby teams also winning gold. Bremmer Frollick from Civil Engineering Services won gold in the 100 meters athletics.

George Municipality hosted the1916 participants in the games last week Friday at the Rosemoor Sportsgrounds who participated in 18 different sport codes. The full day programme started inside the stadium due to the pouring rain. As the weather cleared the different sport codes started and 186 George municipal officials took part.

George Executive Mayor Melvin Naik welcomed everyone to the Garden Route District. He said sports brings people together and advised everyone to be competitive but also forge friendships. He thanked all of the sponsors, including Old Mutual, Nedbank, Coca Cola and especially the department of Cultural Affairs and Sport for choosing George this year as host City.

Ebrahim America from Eden Sport Council said that he is proud to address the athletes and that sport allows for a healthy society. Major-General Oswald Reddy, SAPS, said all of the departments involved have a job which involved service delivery. “In order for our officials to do a good job, they need a healthy body and mind.” He said he has noticed particularly in the South African Police Force, that those officials who are active offer a higher performance in the workplace and book less sick leave. He thanked the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport for this initiative.
