Handover Ceremony Of Tools, Seeds, Certificates To Farmers
George Municipality’s Local Economic Development office in conjunction with the department of Agriculture and the Breede Gouritz Catchment Management Agency donated tools and seed to gardeners and farmers farming with chickens
The Executive Deputy Mayor of George, Cllr Gerrit Pretorius, Cllr David Willemse, Portfolio Councillor for Strategic Services and Adv. Johan van Schalkwyk, Acting Director: Strategic Services, were part of the event where groups of gardeners and people farming with chickens were given tools and seeds and certificates at the event that was held at the Thusong Centre, Thembalethu.
Cllr Pretorius shared a bit about his background and his passion for gardening. On behalf of the Executive Mayor he said this project has been running for 2 years. The project has delivered fruitful production. He praised the Local Economic Department for their excellent work.
Since December 2016 they have delivered tools and seeds and tanks to the value of R204 000 to groups in Touwsranten, Thembalethu and Pacaltsdorp Extension 13 (Europe).
Mr Ben Booysen from the Department of Agriculture that works on the the Farmer Support & Development program said they specifically helps farmers and commercials farmers. They sponsor seed, tools and assist farmers in farming techniques.
Mr Thembalani Dassie from Breede-Gouritz Catchment Management Agency (BGCMA) who controls all the water resources from Breede River to Plettenberg Bay supplies water tanks to the department of Agriculture, which in turns installs the tanks at the participating farmers.
Since last year May the department of Agriculture sponsored training at the Outeniqua Research Farm at the amount of R150 000 for sustainable food gardening and farming with chickens.
Since end of January 2017 training has started again with the department on an advanced course on agriculture and entrepreneurial skills, communication and meeting skills and first aid and safety skills.
