HELP FEED THOUSANDS IN GEORGE DURING COVID-19

HELP FEED THOUSANDS IN GEORGE DURING COVID-19

The George Municipality has a drive-through donation centre where individuals, businesses and organisations can stop-and-drop food, hygiene and sanitary products, clothes and blankets for soup kitchens and the homeless during the Covid-19 crisis period.

Open weekdays from 8am to 6pm, and weekends from 8am to 5pm, the centre at City Hall in York Street serves as a depot from which our Social Services department responsibly distributes supplies to up to 140 home-based kitchens in vulnerable communities across the municipal area and to a kitchen for the temporary homeless shelter at Rosemoor Stadium. Most of these kitchens serve two meals a day for between 50 (in rural areas) and 100 to 200 people (George urban).

The drive-through centre also serves as a collection point for hygiene and sanitary products, clothes, blankets and other supplies used in the operation of the kitchens and homeless shelter.

THE NEXT TIME YOU GO OUT FOR YOUR ESSENTIAL SHOPPING, if you want to donate, come around to the front entrance of City Hall at 71 York Street (opposite Cashalot, between old SARS building and Victoria Street, look out for the one-way sign), drive up the driveway and stop in front of the building. You will be met by an official, dressed in protective gear, who will receive your donation. Please note, for accountability and logistics, our officials must at least record your phone number to log on the donation register – a name and phone number is preferable, but we respect your privacy and hope you would be willing to donate anyway.

People using online grocery delivery services wanting to donate, can make up an online basket and enter the delivery address as Drive-through centre City Hall, 71 York Street, George.

Types of items that will make a big difference include mielie meal, wheat flour, yeast, milk, sugar, salt, coffee, tea, samp, beans, macaroni, soup powder, stock and fresh or frozen vegetables and meat. Cleaning products such as dishwashing liquid, sponges, dishcloths, bleach, all-purpose cleaner and handwash laundry soap and hygiene products such as soap and hand cream will be welcome.

There is also a need for clothing for men, women and children at the homeless shelter.

Donated items are sanitised and then stored in and distributed from the Banquet Hall, which has been disinfected and will be managed to conform to strict health and hygiene protocol.

The centre is being managed by the George Municipality Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management departments in coordination with George Municipality Community and Social Development section.
