Vintage Air Rally

The Vintage Air Rally undertaken by 12 bi-planes (e.g. Tiger Moth, Travel Air 4000, Boeing Stearman) manufactured by the end of 1949 accompanied by 10 support aircraft ended in Stellenbosch on Friday 16 December having commenced 35 days earlier on 12 November 2016 on the island of Crete in the Mediterranean.

A flypast was done by the bi-planes and some of the supporting aircraft took place early morning Friday 16th December at George Airport. The Bush Cats came to land as did the Cessna Caravan which provided the freight support on the trip (essential spares for the bi-planes).

The Bush Cats are built in SA by the Maritz brothers who live in the USA (ex-Southern Africans). The organiser of the Vintage Air Rally, Sam Rutherford, briefly chatted to the gathered guests about the Rally and some of the challenges of the last day with technical and other concerns.

Although it would have been wonderful to have met the Vintage Air Rally team on the ground and chatted about their experiences, the pressing deadline of reaching their destinaton by 13h00 was understood.

George Municipality would like to thank the Vintage Air Rally organisers, George Airports Company, AIFA, Southern Cape Old Car Club as well as George Municipal Traffic, Cleansing and Tourism Departments for the collaborative and supportive approach to co-ordinating this event.
