World of Tomorrow Drama Festival: A first

Media Release: Issued George Municipality, 30th July 2019

World of Tomorrow Drama Festival: A first

The World of Tomorrow drama festival launched by George Municipality kicks off tomorrow with 9 schools battling it out for their share of big prizes and of course, bragging rights.

This is the first time that industrial theatre productions by learners for learners is being used to bring home the message of energy efficiency in South Africa. All eyes will be on George as the Department of Energy supports this initiative, and hope that it’s success will inspire other municipalities to follow suit. According to the Department of Energy officials they are extremely impressed with the creative implementation of their Energy Efficiency Awareness Campaign and Capacity Building program.

The bite size productions of 15min each makes this form of theatre accessible to all schools with 53 primary school learners and 48 high school learners participating. With professional support from the George Arts theatre and drama co-ordinator Heather Stead, the standard will be high and competition fierce. "This initiative gives the children a chance to participate, and represent their school. The learners went to great lengths to source material for the script, I even got asked for the school's electricity bill! Learners are also exposed to possible career paths they might not have considered before,” said principal for Kretzenhoop Primary School, Mr Arries.

Friday night sees the exhibition of a BMW i3, a fully electric vehicle that accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds, without interruption and a glittering event where our winners will showcase their dramas and receive prizes.

Tickets available from Heather on  072 369 3304 or at the door on the night.
