SMART ELECTRICITY METER

George “Going Smart”: Our Journey to a Smarter City

George Municipality is transitioning into a Smarter City—a vision where we use digital technology and data analytics to plan, deliver, and monitor services more efficiently to improve the quality of life for all residents.

The Heart of the Project: Smart Metering Our Electrical Smart Metering rollout is the “engine room” of this modernization. By replacing redundant manual technology with the Kamstrup OMNIA e-meter, we are ensuring complete data integrity. This allows us to accurately manage the cost of supply, improve billing transparency, and prepare our network for future energy frameworks.

How This Benefits You:

  • Accurate Billing: Say goodbye to estimated readings. Your billing will be based on your actual, real-time consumption.
  • Usage Control: By using the Ontec George Home App, you can monitor your consumption patterns, identify high-usage appliances, and manage your monthly expenses more effectively.
  • Service Reliability: The new system allows our Electrical Department to monitor supply quality in real-time, helping us identify and resolve outages or faults much faster.
  • Enhanced Security: Smart meters include built-in fraud detection, such as terminal cover open alerts, protecting our city’s essential infrastructure.

What to Expect During the Rollout This upgrade is being provided free of charge, only for the replacement of old technology. Customers building new homes can purchase a smart meter with the supply.

On the day of installation, our authorized technicians will conduct a professional swap of your meter, documenting the process with photos and helping you set up your mobile usage-tracking app on the spot.

Take Control of Your Energy Future Once your meter is installed, we highly recommend registering on the George Home Portal: https://george.ontec.co.za/index.html . It is a simple process that provides you with a “fuel gauge” for your home’s energy usage, helping you make informed decisions to save costs.
