Further Control Burns Expected for Kat River Alien Vegetation Management Project

George Fire Rescue Services recently carried out a control burn north of Denneoord Water Works as part of its ongoing efforts to manage alien vegetation in the Kat River and Upper Kat River catchment areas. These burns help reduce fuel loads—such as dead leaves, tree limbs, and other debris—thereby preventing the rapid spread of wildfires. Reducing alien vegetation is also a critical component of the Kat River Alien Vegetation Management Project, as it supports water security by improving water flow and storage in the Garden Route Dam.

Control burns are scheduled according to ambient weather conditions, which are critical for safe and effective burns. The Municipality aims to provide advance notice of future burns, ideally a day before, but residents are advised that short notice may sometimes be unavoidable, and George Municipality apologizes in advance for any inconvenience.
