Leading by Example in Waste Separation Initiative

Participants, facilitators and municipal staff gathered for a group photo following the waste separation and recycling awareness training session.

The George Municipality’s Waste Management and Pollution Control Department, in partnership with Henque Waste, recently conducted an awareness and training session for office caretakers and cleaners on the importance of separating waste at source and promoting recycling in the workplace.

“As a department, we continuously encourage residents to separate waste at source by keeping recyclable and non-recyclable materials apart. However, true change starts with us. Change begins at home, and we must lead by example in our own workplaces,” said Nombuyiselo Majola, Manager: Solid Waste and Infrastructure.

Municipal offices are encouraged to implement waste separation practices by providing clearly marked recycling stations and ensuring that recyclable materials such as paper, cardboard, plastic, cans and glass are kept separate from general waste.
By working together, municipal staff can help reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, improve recycling rates, create cleaner workplaces, and contribute to a more sustainable future for the George community.
