Municipal cameras assist SAPS in recovering allegedly stolen vehicle
The cooperation between the South African Police Service (SAPS) and George Municipality’s Integrated Operational Centre has once again demonstrated the value of the Municipal Safer City camera network in supporting crime prevention and law enforcement.
On Thursday, 29 October 2026, SAPS requested assistance from the Municipal Integrated Operational Centre following a report of an allegedly stolen vehicle in George’s Central Business District.
Municipal Safer City operators used the Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system, supported by the municipality’s camera network and dedicated infrastructure, to track the vehicle to Thembalethu, where it was recovered with the assistance of SAPS.
The Executive Mayor of George, Ald Browen Johnson, commended the collaborative effort between SAPS and the municipality’s Community Safety team. “Once again, this demonstrates how effectively the system works. The combination of skilled operators, camera surveillance and SAPS members on the ground enables the tracking and recovery of stolen vehicles,” said Mayor Johnson.
Further information regarding the incident can be obtained from SAPS.
