This is a notification for the planned construction of a BES System for the George Municipality Main Building (Civic Centre), planned to start on the 1st of October 2024 and the planned completion date is March 2025.

Please refer to the Aerial View showing the BESS building position marked in red with the cable route to interlink with the existing main distribution board.

George staff and the public are requested to exercise caution when passing by the construction site.

The upgrade of sewer infrastructure servicing in Gqeba Street, Thembalethu will have an impact on residents and road users for the estimated period from 19 August 2024 to 18 October 2024.

DESCRIPTION:
To accommodate current and future sewage flows a section of sewerage reticulation in Gqeba Street, Thembalethu, must be upgraded.

The scope of works consists of trench excavations for the upgrading of an existing 180-meter gravity sewer pipeline.

PROJECT PERIOD
19 August 2024 to 18 October 2024.

SERVICE DISRUPTION:
Municipal services may be disrupted during construction. Advance notification of planned temporary disruptions will be sent out via social media.

The contractor will communicate directly with residents regarding access to properties.

WORKING HOURS:
Working hours will be from 07h00 to 17h00 Mondays to Fridays and 07h00 – 14h00 on Saturdays as may be needed.

TRAFFIC IMPACT:
Residents, road users and pedestrians need to exercise caution throughout the duration of the construction period. Please adhere to flag persons, temporary road signage and road markings.

Access to properties will be addressed by the Contractor with the homeowners on site.

ACCESS TO SITE:
Access to the site will be strictly controlled. No member of the public will be allowed access to the construction area, in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Access to erven at the construction area will be arranged with the affected resident by the contractor.

The George Municipality apologises for any inconvenience and appeals to all residents to be patient and exercise caution during the upgrade.

Roadblocks

The Road Traffic Act 29 of 1989 and the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996 empowers traffic officers to hold roadblocks.

Pay Your Fines Roadblocks

The Municipality has contracted with a third party to assist in the administration and maintenance of fines issued within its jurisdiction.
* Should you have outstanding fines you may be stopped by a traffic officer at a roadblock commonly referred to as the ‘Pay Your Fines Roadblock’ where you shall be notified by this third party of your outstanding fines and received a summary printout of same.

* Note that the Traffic Departments work closely with this third party to ensure compliance, fairness, and justice.
* Upon receipt of your summary printout, you may either choose to settle your fines at the roadblock or you may do representations for reduction or alternatively follow any of the dispute processes.
* Note that a traffic officer or designated official may serve a summons upon you at a Pay Your Fines Roadblock. Signing for the summons does not amount to a guilty plea; you may choose to settle your fines at the roadblock or to follow any of the above processes before or on your court date.

Padblokkades

– Het u die reg om die verkeersbeampte se aanstellingsertifikaat te sien;
– Mag die verkeersbeamptes u voertuig inspekteer om te sien of dit padwaardig is;

Boetebus Blokkades
Die Munisipaliteit het ‘n kontrak met ‘n derde party aangegaan om by te dra tot die administrasie en instandhouding van boetes wat binne sy jurisdiksie uitgereik is.
* Indien u uitstaande boetes het, mag u deur ‘n verkeersbeampte by ‘n padblokkade, algemeen bekend as die ‘Pay Your Fines’ padblokkade, gestop word waar u deur hierdie derde party in kennis gestel sal word van u uitstaande boetes en ‘n opsomming daarvan sal ontvang.
•Let daarop dat die Verkeersdepartemente saamwerk met hierdie derde party om nakoming, billikheid en geregtigheid te verseker.
•Na ontvangs van u opsomming mag u kies om u boetes by die boetebus blokkade te betaal of u mag vertoë rig vir verlaging of alternatiewelik enige van die dispuutprosesse volg.
– Let daarop dat ‘n verkeersbeampte of vredesbeampte’n dagvaarding op u by ‘n boetebus blokkade mag beteken.

Die ondertekening van die dagvaarding beteken nie ‘n skulderkenning nie; en mag u kies om u boetes by die boetebus blokkade te betaal of een van die bogenoemde prosesse voor óf op u hofdatum te volg.

George residents will have noted an increase in road works all over town, heralding widespread upgrading of roads used by the GO GEORGE bus service.

A list of George Integrated Public Transport Network (GIPTN) infrastructure requirements was assessed by the National Department of Transport which subsequently allocated additional Public Transport National Grant funding of R505 million for some of the projects needed to improve and expand GO GEORGE infrastructure. The infrastructure upgrade projects will include the installation of new bus stops and shelters, road rehabilitation, upgrading of stops, transfer locations and sidewalks, traffic management and road maintenance.

Road rehabilitation
These projects will have most impact on road users. Details of road closures and proposed rerouting will continuously be shared with the public.

Work in Pacaltsdorp will start mid-September, with planned construction timelines as follows:
Mission Street: mid-September 2024 – March 2026
Protea Street: mid-September 2024 – April 2025
Heather, Haydn and Rose Streets: mid-September 2024 – March 2026

In Thembalethu the planned timelines are as follows:
Ngcakani and Ncamanza Streets: mid-September 2024 – October 2025
Tabata and 26th Streets: mid-September 2024 – March 2026

In George Industria work has been ongoing for a few months already in PW Botha Boulevard with completion planned for March 2026.

Rosemoor roadworks have already commenced with planned timelines as follows:
Beer and Woltemade Streets: end-August 2024 – April 2025
O’Connell Street: end-August 2024 – April 2025

In Heather Park a small section of Airway Street will be under construction from mid-September 2024 until December 2024.

The Wellington Street intersection improvement in Bo-Dorp have been ongoing since July and should be completed by October 2024.

Streets earmarked for rehabilitation were selected based on physical inspections to identify areas showing critical signs of deterioration.

Rehabilitation will entail reparation of severe crocodile cracking, structural failures and low points on roads where stormwater concentrates without catch pits, rightsizing of intersections, road re-alignments and kerbside improvements to conform with universal accessibility requirements.

The George Municipality apologises for the inconvenience and appeals to road users to adapt their travelling patterns (departure times, planning of trips, etc), be patient and exercise caution for the duration of the projects.

Please look out for and adhere to temporary road signage and be aware of roadwork personnel, as well as heavy machinery in the proximity of construction sites.

Die Wellingtonstraat-kruising in Bo-Dorp is reeds sedert Julie aan die gang en behoort teen Oktober 2024 voltooi te wees.

Strate wat vir rehabilitasie geoormerk is, is gekies op grond van fisiese inspeksies om gebiede te identifiseer wat kritieke tekens van agteruitgang toon. Rehabilitasie behels die herstel van ernstige krokodilkrake, strukturele ineenstorting en lae punte op paaie waar stormwater konsentreer sonder vangputte, regstelling van grootte by kruisings, padherbelynings en verbeterings aan randstene om aan universele toeganklikheidsvereistes te voldoen.

Die George Munisipaliteit vra om verskoning vir die ongerief en doen ‘n beroep op padgebruikers om hul reispatrone (vertrektye, beplanning van reise, ens.) aan te pas, geduldig en versigtig te wees vir die duur van die projekte. Wees asseblief op die uitkyk (en gehoorsaam) vir tydelike konstruksieborde en bewus van padwerkpersoneel, sowel as swaar masjinerie in die nabyheid van konstruksieterreine.

What happens if I don’t pay or contest my fine?
•Failure to make payment or attend to the Municipal Court on your court date may result in a warrant for your arrest being authorised, which carries an additional fine for contempt of court.

What happens if a warrant for my arrest has been authorised?
•You may elect to pay an admission of guilt fine for your contempt of court. Note that this is an additional admission of guilt fine over-and-above your fine.
•Note that paying an admission of guilt fine for your contempt of court does not equate to an admission of guilt of the charges against you per your fine. You may therefore still dispute the charges, proceed with trial, and/or make representations for the reduction of your fine should you wish to pay accordingly.
•Should you dispute your contempt of court or be unable to pay an admission of guilt fine for your contempt of court, you shall be brought before the Municipal Court for a warrant enquiry. The Municipal Court shall hear your evidence pertaining to your contempt of court and make a finding as to your guilt.

Note that should you be found guilty by the Municipal Court of contempt of court, you may be fined to direct imprisonment should it be deemed in the interests of justice.

If power lines are in the vicinity of your planned work and could be affected, contact George Municipality Electrotechnical Services immediately during office hours at the numbers below.

An official will come out to inspect the area and determine if it’s safe to proceed. If the tree cutting is considered too risky, the municipality will arrange to shut down the electricity and handle the tree removal safely.

Please contact us at least 48 hours prior. Your call will be logged, and you will receive a reference number.

If you notice any trees or vegetation on municipal property that could pose a risk to electrical lines, report it right away. Provide your name, contact information, and the location of the potential hazard.
