Public Notice: Construction of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for George Municipality Main Building

This is a public notification of the planned construction of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for the George Municipality Main Building (Civic Centre), planned to start on 14 January 2025 and be completed in April 2025.

Please find the attached image showing the BESS building position marked in red, the cable route and the affected area marked in yellow.

George Municipality staff and the public are urged to exercise caution when passing the construction site.

UPDATE: Low Water Pressure and Water Outage in Wilderness

Following last night’s report of a pipe burst near Waterside Road in Wilderness, combined with previous bursts, the situation has resulted in critically low reservoir levels.

Repairs could not be completed overnight due to restricted access on a forest trail and the need for specialised components. Municipal teams have sourced the necessary components and are now on-site attending to the repair.

The Estimated Time of Repair (ETR) is 4–5 hours.

We apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we work to restore the water supply.

PUBLIC NOTICE: Motor Vehicle Accident at Outeniqua Pass

A motor vehicle accident has occurred at Outeniqua Pass near Step-Aside. Preliminary reports indicate that a truck’s brakes failed on the downhill, causing the driver to lose control and hit the verge. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.

A stop-and-go system is in place, and two lanes have been closed to allow recovery operations.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution, expect delays, and follow the instructions of traffic officials.

A pipe burst near Waterside Road, combined with recent bursts, has left the reservoir at critically low levels. Municipal teams are attending to the issue and sourcing critical components required for the repair. Temporary and alternative repairs have been attempted without success.

Due to restricted access on a forest trail where the burst occurred and the need for specialised components, full repairs are scheduled for the Saturday morning of 11 January 2025.

Residents can expect low water pressure for the remainder of today and into tomorrow. To maintain reservoir levels, everyone is urged to use water sparingly.

A water tanker will be stationed at the Astron Petrol Station (across from Wilderness Spar) from 08:00 on 11 January 2025 to assist residents with water.

UNEXPECTED WATER OUTAGE – THEMBALETHU ZONE 3, 4, 5

Please be advised that a water outage has occurred in Thembalethu Zone 3, 4, and 5 due to a contractor accidentally hitting a pipe on Ngcakani Road.

Municipal teams are currently on site working to repair the damage.

Estimated Time of Repair is 6 to 8 hours

A water tanker is circulating between the affected zones to provide temporary water supply.
