CAUTION: STRONG WINDS – GEORGE MUNICIPAL AREA

The South African Weather Service has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging winds affecting parts of the Western Cape and Namaqua.

Although George is not specifically listed in the affected areas, strong winds are currently being experienced in parts of the George Municipal area. Residents and visitors are therefore urged to exercise caution, particularly when travelling or engaging in outdoor activities.

Strong winds can result in:
• Fallen trees and branches;
• Damage to temporary structures and loose objects;
• Difficult driving conditions, especially for high-sided vehicles;
• Disruptions to outdoor activities; and
• Difficult conditions for small boats and other water activities.

Help prevent fires during windy conditions
Strong winds can cause fires to spread rapidly.

Please:
• Do not make open fires in unsafe or exposed areas.
• Do not burn garden waste, rubbish or vegetation during windy conditions.
• Ensure braais and other fires are properly extinguished before leaving them.
• Do not throw cigarette butts onto dry grass, roadsides or other open areas.
• Keep flammable materials, gas cylinders and other combustible items secured and away from flames.
• Avoid activities that can create sparks near dry vegetation.
• If you see a fire, report it immediately and move away from the area.

Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items, take care when driving and remain alert to changing weather conditions.

Stay safe and exercise caution while strong winds persist.
