Beware of Fraudulent Banking and Municipal Account Communications

George Municipality urges all residents, businesses, and service users to be vigilant following reports of fraudsters impersonating the municipality to solicit payments or banking details under false pretences.

Any message or communication suggesting otherwise is fraudulent.
Examples of Common Scam Tactics:
If you receive any suspicious communication, especially messages that include the following, do not act on them:
• Claims that the Municipality’s banking details have changed
• Offers of early settlement discounts to reduce your account balance
• Threatening or urgent messages pressuring you to pay immediately
• Requests for payment via Bitcoin or untraceable methods
• Claims that your services (e.g., electricity/water) will be cut off if payment isn’t made
• Requests for your personal or banking details

George Municipality will never ask you to share your banking information or offer unsolicited payment discounts.

Power Outage Ebb and Flow Area

Please note that a power outage is currently affecting the Ebb and Flow area. This is due to a faulty high voltage cable linked to a portion of wilderness that is impacting the electrical infrastructure.

Our technical teams are on-site and working to resolve the issue as a matter of urgency. An Estimated Time of Repair will be communicated as soon as more information becomes available.

Update 7: Gwaiing Road Construction Works, George

Issued by George Municipality on behalf of Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM), on 15 July 2025

The GRDM construction team has continued with the upgrading of the Gwaiing Road, nearing the completion of the placement of the final gravel layer on the right-hand side lane for the full length of the project.

Once this layer has cured and the final test results have been issued, the layer will then be sealed with a temporary bituminous seal.

Temporary Closure of Main Building for Fumigation

Please note that the George Municipality’s main building at 71 York Street will close to the public at 15:30 on Thursday, 17 July 2025, to allow for scheduled fumigation.

This routine fumigation, aimed at controlling crawling and creeping insects, is conducted every 3 to 4 months or as needed to maintain a clean and healthy environment.

The building will reopen on Friday, 18 July 2025, during normal office hours.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this essential health and safety procedure.

Sewage Spill by Private Institution – Gwaing River Now Safe

Earlier this month, George Municipality reported a suspected sewage discharge into the Gwaing River Mouth by a private institution.

Following extensive testing by the Scientific Services Department, we are pleased to confirm that the Gwaing River Mouth and adjacent sea area are now safe for public use, including swimming and fishing.

The Municipality will continue to monitor the area as part of our commitment to public health and environmental protection.
