Water scarcity requires temporary disconnection of public beach showers

Due to ongoing severe water demand management measures, all public showers at municipal beaches and public swimming pools in George have been temporarily disconnected with immediate effect. This intervention has the full support of WESSA with regard to the Blue Flag beaches.

As part of the Municipality’s water-saving interventions, flow restrictors have been installed at all public beach facilities for some time. These devices reduce the volume of water released by limiting the flow rate, helping to conserve water while still allowing basic use. The current severe water demand management measures in place however, require additional action to protect the municipal drinking water supply.

Residents and visitors are urged to use water sparingly and responsibly at all times. If you notice a tap dripping or a shower running unnecessarily — whether at a gym, at home or any public facility — please take a moment to switch it off or report it. George Municipality thanks residents, businesses and visitors for their continued cooperation, understanding and commitment to saving water during this challenging period.

Every Drop Counts.

Issuing of Temporary Driving Licences

The Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC) has noted an increase in late applications for the renewal of driving licence cards. Members of the public are advised that when applying for a new driving licence card and the issuing of a temporary driving licence, the same legal requirements apply, including eye testing. Vision standards differ according to the code of the driving licence applied for.

In many cases, where applicants do not meet the prescribed vision standards, the driving licence code may need to be downgraded. Such applications must be submitted to the Mobility Department and the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) for approval. Please note that both entities are closed for the festive season and will only resume operations on 05 January 2026. As a result, a temporary driving licence may not be issued, and the affected individual will not be permitted to operate a motor vehicle, as this would constitute driving without a valid licence.

In terms of Section 15(1)(f)(vi) of the National Road Traffic Act, Act 93 of 1996, a person is disqualified from obtaining or holding a learner’s or driving licence if he or she suffers from defective vision as determined in accordance with prescribed standards. This is further supported by Regulation 102, which deals with defective vision disqualifying a person from holding or obtaining a licence.

With regard to licence card validity, Regulation 108(5)(a) provides that a driving licence card expires five years from the date it was ordered from the Card Production Facility. Regulation 108(6)(a) further states that if a person applies for a new driving licence card on or before the expiry date, and the licence has not been suspended or cancelled, the existing card remains valid for up to three months after expiry, pending the issuing of the new card.

Drivers may continue to use their expired driving licence card during this period only if they are in possession of:
The expired driving licence card, and proof of application (receipt) for the new driving licence card.

Motorists are urged to apply for renewal well in advance of the expiry date of their driving licence cards to avoid inconvenience, delays, or the risk of being unable to legally operate a motor vehicle

PUBLIC NOTICE: Illegal Resale of Municipal Water Prohibited

George Municipality has become aware, with concern, of incidents where water purchased from municipal depots is being resold by certain contractors, including for the purpose of filling swimming pools within the municipal area. Reports indicate that some of these activities involve water tanker trucks with capacities ranging from 4000 to 10000 litres.

The Municipality reiterates that the resale of municipal water is strictly prohibited, unless prior written permission has been granted by the Municipality. Furthermore, the filling of swimming pools using potable municipal water is not permitted under the current Level 2C Water Demand Management Measures, which came into effect on 4 December 2025.

Such practices are illegal in terms of the George Municipality Water and Sanitation Services By-Law and constitute a direct contravention of the approved water demand management measures.

In this regard, attention is drawn to Section 19(8) of the Water and Sanitation Services By-Law, which states: “No customer shall resell water supplied to him by the municipality except with the written permission of the municipality, which may stipulate the maximum price at which the water may be resold, and may impose such other conditions as the municipality may deem fit.”

Non-compliance with the By-Law and applicable water demand management measures may result in enforcement action, including fines or further legal steps as provided for in municipal legislation.

Contractors and members of the public may purchase potable water strictly for their own use, subject to payment in accordance with the approved municipal tariff list. Proof of payment must be submitted to the Water Distribution Section before water is released. In addition, raw (non-potable) water may be purchased from the Water Treatment Plant in Denneoord, subject to application and depending on the intended use.

Members of the public are encouraged to report suspected incidents of illegal water resale or non-compliance with water demand management measures to Civil Engineering Services (Water Services) on 044 801 9260 / 044 801 6300.

George Municipality appeals to all contractors, residents, and businesses to act responsibly, comply with all water use regulations, and support efforts to safeguard limited water resources during this period of increased water stress.

Bruin Water – Proteaville, Haarlem

*****
