Planned construction of the New Pacaltsdorp (East) reservoir, tower & pump station, initially scheduled for weekdays, will also include 14 & 21 September 2024 between 07:00 and 14:00.

George residents will have noted an increase in road works all over town, heralding widespread upgrading of roads used by the GO GEORGE bus service.

A list of George Integrated Public Transport Network (GIPTN) infrastructure requirements was assessed by the National Department of Transport which subsequently allocated additional Public Transport National Grant funding of R505 million for some of the projects needed to improve and expand GO GEORGE infrastructure. The infrastructure upgrade projects will include the installation of new bus stops and shelters, road rehabilitation, upgrading of stops, transfer locations and sidewalks, traffic management and road maintenance.

Road rehabilitation
These projects will have most impact on road users. Details of road closures and proposed rerouting will continuously be shared with the public.

Work in Pacaltsdorp will start mid-September, with planned construction timelines as follows:
Mission Street: mid-September 2024 – March 2026
Protea Street: mid-September 2024 – April 2025
Heather, Haydn and Rose Streets: mid-September 2024 – March 2026

In Thembalethu the planned timelines are as follows:
Ngcakani and Ncamanza Streets: mid-September 2024 – October 2025
Tabata and 26th Streets: mid-September 2024 – March 2026

In George Industria work has been ongoing for a few months already in PW Botha Boulevard with completion planned for March 2026.

Rosemoor roadworks have already commenced with planned timelines as follows:
Beer and Woltemade Streets: end-August 2024 – April 2025
O’Connell Street: end-August 2024 – April 2025

In Heather Park a small section of Airway Street will be under construction from mid-September 2024 until December 2024.

The Wellington Street intersection improvement in Bo-Dorp have been ongoing since July and should be completed by October 2024.

Streets earmarked for rehabilitation were selected based on physical inspections to identify areas showing critical signs of deterioration.

Rehabilitation will entail reparation of severe crocodile cracking, structural failures and low points on roads where stormwater concentrates without catch pits, rightsizing of intersections, road re-alignments and kerbside improvements to conform with universal accessibility requirements.

The George Municipality apologises for the inconvenience and appeals to road users to adapt their travelling patterns (departure times, planning of trips, etc), be patient and exercise caution for the duration of the projects.

Please look out for and adhere to temporary road signage and be aware of roadwork personnel, as well as heavy machinery in the proximity of construction sites.

Details of further road upgrade work will be published as may be necessary

INFRASTRUKTUUR EN PADOPGRADERINGS VIR GEORGE

George-inwoners sou ‘n toename in padwerke opmerk regoor die dorp. Hierdie projekte lui wydverspreide opgradering van paaie wat deur die GO GEORGE-busdiens gebruik word in. Die Nasionale Departement van Vervoer het ‘n lys van die George Geïntegreerde Openbare Vervoernetwerk se infrastruktuurbehoeftes geassesseer en bykomende befondsing uit die nasionale openbarevervoerfonds bewillig vir sommige van die projekte wat nodig is om GO GEORGE-infrastruktuur te verbeter en uit te brei.

Die infrastruktuuropgraderingsprojekte sal die installering van nuwe bushaltes en skuilings, padrehabilitasie, opgradering van bushaltes, oorklimpunte en sypaadjies, verkeersbestuur en padinstandhouding insluit.

Padrehabilitasie
Hierdie projekte sal die grootste impak op padgebruikers hê.

Besonderhede van padsluitings en voorgestelde herleiding sal deurlopend met die publiek gedeel word.

Die Wellingtonstraat-kruising in Bo-Dorp is reeds sedert Julie aan die gang en behoort teen Oktober 2024 voltooi te wees.

Strate wat vir rehabilitasie geoormerk is, is gekies op grond van fisiese inspeksies om gebiede te identifiseer wat kritieke tekens van agteruitgang toon. Rehabilitasie behels die herstel van ernstige krokodilkrake, strukturele ineenstorting en lae punte op paaie waar stormwater konsentreer sonder vangputte, regstelling van grootte by kruisings, padherbelynings en verbeterings aan randstene om aan universele toeganklikheidsvereistes te voldoen.

Die George Munisipaliteit vra om verskoning vir die ongerief en doen ‘n beroep op padgebruikers om hul reispatrone (vertrektye, beplanning van reise, ens.) aan te pas, geduldig en versigtig te wees vir die duur van die projekte. Wees asseblief op die uitkyk (en gehoorsaam) vir tydelike konstruksieborde en bewus van padwerkpersoneel, sowel as swaar masjinerie in die nabyheid van konstruksieterreine.

Besonderhede van verdere padopgraderingswerk sal gepubliseer word soos nodig

The road rehabilitation and upgrade of stormwater infrastructure in Puma Street, and the construction of sidewalks in Puma and Antelope Streets, Delville Park, will impact residents and road users from September 2024 to February 2025.
The construction duration is estimated at 6 months.

PROJECT:
UPGRADING OF ROADS, SIDEWALKS AND STORMWATER INFRASTRUCTURE: DELVILLE PARK – PHASE 3

DESCRIPTION:
Road rehabilitation includes repairs to the base layers, surface layers, kerbs and channels.
Stormwater infrastructure upgrades include the construction of catch pits, manholes and sub-soil drains.
Sidewalks will be constructed on both sides of the road in Puma and Antelope Streets.

PROJECT PERIOD:
September 2024 to February 2025

SERVICE DISRUPTION:
Municipal services may be disrupted during construction. Advance notification of planned temporary disruptions will be sent out via social media.

WORKING HOURS:
Working hours will be from 07h00 to 18h00 Mondays to Fridays and 07h00 – 14h00 on Saturdays as may be needed occasionally.

Caution needs to be exercised by residents, road users and pedestrians throughout the duration of the construction period. Adherence to flag persons, temporary road signage and markings will be required. Sections of the road may be closed to the public, but access will be granted to residents.

The National Library of South Africa (NLSA), in conjunction with the Department of Correctional Services and George Municipality, is proud to host the next Funda Mzantsi Championship (FMC) in George from 23 – 27 September 2024. FMC is a reading competition for book clubs to stimulate and encourage a reading culture among South Africans.

In preparation for the Competition, book clubs are required to read selected books from a specific list and participants are assessed in four categories – impromptu reading, debating, spelling bee and book reviewing in all official South African languages.

Through the Funda Mzantsi Championship, the NLSA brings together minds – both young and old, breaking the racial, gender and social status boundaries, in pursuit of a common goal.

The Pacaltsdorp Satellite Thusong Service Centre will be officially launched on Wednesday, 18 September 2024, from 9:00 to 14:00 at the Tourism Information Building located on Mission Street in Pacaltsdorp.

The George Municipality’s MMC for Community Services – Social Development, Sport, Libraries & Customer Care Cllr Melvin Roelfse, the Executive Mayoral Committee members and invited stakeholders will attend the official opening.

Thusong Facilities are defined as One-stop integrated community facilities where the residents can access the needed government information, services and resources. Thusong Service Centre Programme is designed to bring government information and services closer to the people, promoting access to opportunities and contributing to improved livelihoods.

The Pacaltsdorp Satellite Thusong Service Centre the Facility will host the South Africa Social Security Agency (SASSA), the Department of Labour, the Department of Home Affairs, the Department of Social Development (on a scheduled event basis) and the Community Development Workers (CDW), among others.

This launch coincides with the Annual Thusong Service Centre Week, which runs from 16 to 20 September 2024 nationwide. The week is part of Integrated Public Service Month, aimed at highlighting the essential role of Thusong Service Centres in enhancing community access to services and information about opportunities.

What happens if I don’t pay or contest my fine?
•Failure to make payment or attend to the Municipal Court on your court date may result in a warrant for your arrest being authorised, which carries an additional fine for contempt of court.

What happens if a warrant for my arrest has been authorised?
•You may elect to pay an admission of guilt fine for your contempt of court. Note that this is an additional admission of guilt fine over-and-above your fine.
•Note that paying an admission of guilt fine for your contempt of court does not equate to an admission of guilt of the charges against you per your fine. You may therefore still dispute the charges, proceed with trial, and/or make representations for the reduction of your fine should you wish to pay accordingly.
•Should you dispute your contempt of court or be unable to pay an admission of guilt fine for your contempt of court, you shall be brought before the Municipal Court for a warrant enquiry. The Municipal Court shall hear your evidence pertaining to your contempt of court and make a finding as to your guilt.

Note that should you be found guilty by the Municipal Court of contempt of court, you may be fined to direct imprisonment should it be deemed in the interests of justice.

•U mag kies om ‘n erkenning van skuld boete te betaal vir minagting van die hof. Let daarop dat dit ‘n addisionele erkenning van skuld boete is bo-en-behalwe u oorspronklike boete.

•Let daarop dat die betaling van ‘n erkenning van skuld boete vir minagting van die hof nie gelykstaande is aan ‘n skulderkenning van die aanklagte teen u volgens u boete nie.

U mag dus steeds die aanklagte betwis, voortgaan met die verhoor, en/of vertoë rig vir die vermindering van u boete indien u dit wil betaal.

•Indien u u minagting van die hof betwis of nie in staat is om ‘n erkenning van skuld boete vir minagting van die hof te betaal nie, sal u na die Munisipale Hof gebring word vir ‘n lasbriefondersoek. Die Munisipale Hof sal na u getuienis oor u minagting van die hof aanhoor en ‘n bevinding maak oor u skuld.

Let daarop dat as u deur die Munisipale Hof skuldig bevind word aan minagting van die hof, u tot direkte gevangenisstraf gevonnis mag word indien dit in die belange van die geregtigheid geag word.
