Public Notice: Older driving licence cards (issued 2020/2021) will be destroyed if not collected

Public Notice: Older driving licence cards (issued 2020/2021) will be destroyed if not collected

Issued by George Municipality 13 September 2022 for immediate release

George Municipality would like to inform those members of the public who have already received SMS’s from the Department of Traffic Services in George, for the collection of driving licence cards issued during 2020 and 2021, that these cards must be collected. Failure to collect will result in them being destroyed 90 days after receipt of the latest SMS.

The Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works announced the measures being taken after being inundated with requests from DLTCs about uncollected driving licence cards and the challenge the local municipal offices are experiencing with storage space, especially cards that were produced early in 2020 and 2021.

George Traffic Services, in adhering to a Departmental Circular has already started sending out SMS’s informing applicants to collect their driver’s licence cards. This will be the last notice to applicants to collect cards issued in 2020 or 2021.

According to Traffic Services, applicants have already received at least two SMS’s to notify them of collection. After 60 days of application, it remains the responsibility of the applicant to inquire about the status of their application, as stated on the back of their receipt. All applicants should adhere to the instructions at the back of the receipt.

The Traffic Services office in Mission Street, Pacaltsdorp will plan to have the office open on Saturdays from 09h00 to 12h00 for people that cannot visit the office during office hours. However, please take note that the SMS sent to applicants will specify which Saturdays those applicants may visit the offices. We ask the public to NOT randomly visit the Traffic office on Saturdays if they did not receive a SMS to do so because they will not be assisted. This arrangement is being done in this way, to ensure operations flow on the day, with the cards and details of the applicants on hand. The offices will render this specific service for at least 90 days until December but may extend the service if needs be.  If you miss your Saturday dates (specified in the SMS), you will have to visit the offices on weekdays from 08h00 to 15h00.

A DRIVING LICENCE CARD MUST BE COLLECTED BY THE APPLICANT OR IF NOT POSSIBLE PROVIDE AN AFFIDAVIT FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO COLLECT IT.

For more information please contact the office on 044 878 2400.
