George Municipality Embraces Visual Art with Management Policy

Wilderness residents Stephanie Olivier, Hannah Olivier, and Eben du Toit enjoyed interacting with Fourie Ackerman’s artwork at Leentjiesklip.

Artwork by Glenwood High School learner Kaelyn Haffern completed in December 2023.

In June 2023, George Municipality adopted the Visual Artwork Management Policy, a significant step toward enhancing the city’s public spaces through creative expression. The policy provides guidelines for submitting and evaluating proposals from individuals or organizations interested in creating and displaying visual artwork in public areas.

The artwork by Fourie Ackerman at Leentjiesklip has given these public facilities a vibrant new look, transforming them into lively and welcoming spaces.

The policy was drafted by Winsley Meyer, a young Candidate Town Planner who joined the municipality in 2022 as part of the ISDG program. Winsley had previously been involved in the review and amendment process for the Outdoor Advertising By-law. During this review, it was discovered that the by-law only allowed for advertising of businesses through mural artwork and did not consider artistic murals aimed at beautifying public spaces. This gap in the by-law was a key reason for developing the Visual Artwork Management Policy. The policy aims to give artists the opportunity to display their work in a controlled manner while also enhancing the visual appeal of public areas and creating a unique sense of place.

Winsley Meyer, Candidate Town Planner at the George Municipality who drafted the Visual Arts Management Policy.

“The outdoor advertising by-law review gave me the background knowledge to start drafting the visual artwork policy. From there, I conducted extensive research, reviewing local and international policies and guidelines on various forms of visual artwork, design, and maintenance. I’ve always had a passion for visual arts and design, so being granted the opportunity to draft this policy was incredibly exciting for me. I enjoyed the process and am thrilled to see it implemented by such skilled artists. I look forward to seeing more artwork in our community,” said Meyer.

The first project under the new policy was undertaken in December 2023 by Kaelyn Haffern, a student at Glenwood House High School in George and a talented street artist. Funded by the Wilderness Ratepayers and Residents Association (WRRA), Kaelyn volunteered her time and talent to beautify the wall and substation along Station Road leading to Leentjiesklip Beach in Wilderness.
Following the success of Kaelyn’s project, the WRRA facilitated and funded additional projects by Garden Route artists Philip Denn and Fourie Ackerman. These artists were commissioned to enhance the public facilities at Main Beach Wilderness (near Salina’s), Leentjiesklip, and the western wall at Main Beach.

MMC for Planning and Development and Ward 4 Councillor, Marlene Barnardt noted that the Visual Artwork Management Policy allows for artwork to be displayed on both public and private properties, excluding outdoor advertising. It also identifies designated spaces that serve as practice areas for temporary mural art forms, where emerging artists can develop their skills. “George Municipality is committed to celebrating the diverse talent within our communities and aims to create a platform for artistic expression. By collaborating with the art community, we hope to enhance the unique qualities of the city and its people,” she said.

Artists interested in submitting proposals can contact the Directorate of Human Settlements, Planning, and Development via email at znorawana@george.gov.za.

Celebrations Erupt as Municipality Hands Over 78 New Homes in Rosedale Erf 325

Braving the cold weather, Executive Mayor Jackie von Brandis, George Municipal Councillors, beneficiaries, community members, and officials, gathered to celebrate the new homeowners during the joyous housing handover at Erf 325.

Songs of praise and jubilation filled the air on Wednesday, 28 August 2024, as 78 families received the keys to their new homes during an official housing handover ceremony at the Erf 325 East Housing Development in Rosedale, Pacaltsdorp. Despite the cold weather, the event was marked by celebration, with Breaking New Ground (BNG) beneficiaries and community members gathering to support the new homeowners.

The Executive Mayor of George, Alderman Jackie von Brandis, led the handover of the houses to the 78 beneficiaries, joined by the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Human Settlements in the George Municipality, Jean Safers, and Ward 14 Councillor, Melvin Roelfse, who served as the programme director. The ceremony was also attended by MMCs from various portfolio committees, councillors, municipal officials, Ward Committee members, and home-based care workers.

Mayor von Brandis officially marked the handover by cutting the ribbon at one of the houses. Addressing the attendees, she expressed the urgency felt by citizens in receiving their homes. She thanked everyone involved in the construction and administration of the houses, saying, “Thank you for coming out in this cold weather to celebrate this beautiful day. My first conversation with Minister Tertuis Simmers (Western Cape Minister for Human Settlements) was about housing, especially the houses that were already completed. When I suggested we hand them over, the Minister agreed immediately, even if he couldn’t be here today. We thank the Minister for his great leadership and the Provincial Government for the funding that made this possible.”

She continued, “I also want to thank Councillor Safers, the MMC for Human Settlements in George, and the George Municipality’s Human Settlements department for their administration. I’m overjoyed for the beneficiaries that we could all celebrate the receipt of these houses; this is indeed a joyous occasion.”

The first house was handed over to 40-year-old Caroline Booysen, who is living with a disability. Booysen expressed her gratitude, saying, “I couldn’t contain my tears—they’ve been rolling down from excitement and joy. I’m very grateful for my new house.”

Among the beneficiaries were also elderly citizens. Eighty-year-old Nofundile Jaxa shared, “I’m ecstatic to receive a home. When I heard I would finally be receiving my house today, I couldn’t sleep last night, looking forward to this moment.” Another recipient, 73-year-old David Louw, was overjoyed, saying, “I’ve waited nearly 20 years for my house. Today, I almost want to shed tears of joy for receiving this home. I’m very happy.”

MMC for Human Settlements, Councillor Jean Safers, remarked, “This is another milestone that shows the Western Cape Government means business when it comes to service delivery. We urge new homeowners to take good care of their properties and keep them clean. We also don’t want to hear that these houses have turned into spaza shops.”

Officials from the George Municipality’s Human Settlements department conducted a consumer education programme to guide the new homeowners about the responsibilities of a homeowner and how to care for their properties. As they received their homes, 16 beneficiaries received their title deeds. The remaining 62 will be handed over as soon as it is received from the Attorneys. The 78 families who received their houses today came from various informal settlements in Pacaltsdorp, the waiting list under the selection criteria of 60 years and older, farm dwellers, persons with disabilities, and the general waiting list.

The Erf 325 East Pacaltsdorp Housing Project is a catalytic initiative funded by the Provincial Department of Infrastructure. This mixed-use development, which began in 2018, is part of the 1,091 Breaking New Ground (BNG) units, including double-storey, semi-detached, and freestanding units. It also comprises 147 Finance Linked Individual Subsidy Programme (FLISP) units, 32 units for persons with disabilities, and 30 units for military veterans. The project will also provide one general residential erf, four crèches, three churches, one community centre, and seven commercial/business erven.

GMUN MEDIA RELEASE: George Tourism Launches “George Naturally” Brand

George Tourism proudly launched its new concept, “George Naturally,” at a well-attended Business Chamber meeting held last night at the Sami.G Retail Park in Pioneer Street, where Wonderland properties co-sponsored the launch, to show off the spectacular new property. Even on a chilly night, the launch drew a large crowd and featured a keynote address by Dr. Ivan Meyer, Western Cape MEC for Agriculture, Economic Development, and Tourism.

Joan Shaw, Tourism Manager, introduced the “George Naturally” concept, explaining that since 2018, the George Tourism Office was allowed to develop a destination logo separate from George Municipality’s branding, focusing on Wilderness, George, and Uniondale Tourism. Over time, however, there was a recognized need for a more inspirational logo that captures the essence of the destination rather than just naming its main hubs. The aesthetic required an upgrade to represent a destination brand worthy of George’s unique appeal.

“Many people think of George primarily as a business hub,” Shaw explained, “but few immediately think of the exquisite natural environment that offers a natural playground for residents and visitors alike. This realization led to the birth of the ‘George Naturally’ concept. We are extremely proud that this concept was both conceived and designed locally.”

Caption: Attending the launch of the “George Naturally” Brand are from left MMC Corporate Services Nosicelo Mbete, Tourism Manager Joan Shaw, MMC Finance Marais Kruger, MEC for Agriculture, Economic Development, and Tourism Dr Ivan Meyer, Executive Mayor Jackie von Brandis, MMC Planning and Development (Tourism) Marlene Barnardt, MMC Civil Engineering Browen Johnson, MMC Spcial Development Melvin Roelfse and Chief Whip Teresa Jeyi.

The “George Naturally” brand is a dual-purpose concept. On one hand, it describes the pristine environment that the area is known for; on the other, it is a clever play on words, positioning George as the natural choice for business, pleasure, and lifestyle. The brand encompasses every sight, activity, and offering available in the greater George area (including Wilderness, Uniondale and other small villages), highlighting not only its natural beauty but also the world-class services and facilities available to residents and visitors.

Marlene Barnardt, MMC for Planning and Development, expressed her enthusiasm for the new branding. “I believe it epitomizes everything that George and its surroundings have to offer—naturally. The play on words is clever, and credit must be given to the previous MMC responsible for Tourism, Dirk Wessels, and long-standing Tourism Manager, Joan Shaw. Let’s hope this inspires people to make George their first choice for a holiday destination, business location, or relocation—naturally.”

George Tourism extends its gratitude to all the sponsors who contributed to last night’s successful launch event, including venue, catering, drinks, and prizes. A special thanks to:
• The Views Boutique Hotel
• Oppie See, Herolds Bay
• Cloverleigh Guest House, Wilderness
• Harvil House, George
• Views Over Wilderness
• Outeniqua Brew
• George Powervan
• George Golf Club
• Sierra Massage Lounge

“George Naturally” represents not just a brand, but a new chapter for George Tourism, one that highlights the natural beauty, business opportunities, and exceptional lifestyle that the area has to offer.

Letter to Nersa by Executive Mayor Jackie von Brandis

NERSA’S DECISION ON ESKOM’S MYPD5 REVENUE APPLICATION

As Executive Mayor of George Municipality, I am writing to you on behalf of the citizens of George, to object in the strongest possible terms to NERSA granting Eskom an increase in the price of electricity of 44% for the 2024/25 financial year. This price increase is not only unaffordable, but unfair and unjust to our citizens.

Our customers, inclusive of residents, small and medium businesses, cannot afford these price increases that is well above the consumer price index (CPI). The vast majority of South Africans find it difficult to make ends meet and this increase will only further exacerbate this fact.

As the energy regulator, NERSA is responsible for providing the necessary guidelines to Eskom to ensure that it fulfils its mandate, based on this, our residents simply cannot be expected to carry the burden of mismanagement at Eskom through exorbitant tariff increases such as this one.

This proposed tariff increase will result in the majority of South Africans being left in a dire situation if approved as is. Our formal and informal businesses will be forced to close their doors as the cost of fuel and food will rise as a result of the increase in the cost of energy.

Any increase considered should at the very least be in line with the CPI inflation rate target of 5.5%. An increase of 44% is therefore simply cannot be ratified.
In addition, Eskom provides no preference to its good customers who regularly pay their accounts, in terms of price increases or regular supply of electricity.

It is an extreme injustice to expect that ordinary citizens of George (and, indeed, residents of every municipality in the country) should be forced to bear the cost of Eskom and its ongoing woes.
I trust that this letter will receive your urgent attention to reverse the price increase that has been granted.

Yours faithfully
J VON BRANDIS
EXECUTIVE MAYOR
GEORGE MUNICIPALITY

George Municipality’s women’s event, held in observance of Women’s Month, recently drew approximately 50 local women to Borchards Youth for Christ Hall, paying homage to thousands of women who protested the Pass Law and racial restrictions at the Union Building in Pretoria on August 9, 1956.

Themed “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress,” the event highlighted the vital role of women in leadership and collective action in driving social change. This year’s theme also focused on addressing gender equality and promoting opportunities for women to rise to leadership roles without facing discrimination.

The event, organised by the Gender and Disability subsection of Community Development, aimed to provide networking opportunities, motivational support, and practical information for women. Participants, including mothers of children enrolled in Kidstop programmes, received valuable insights and skills to improve their lives.

The event received enthusiastic feedback from attendees and was supported by several key stakeholders, including the Executive Mayor of George, Ald Jackie von Brandis, MMC for Community Development, Cllr Melvin Roelfse, Cllr Erika Brown, Department of Social Development and Child Welfare.

Nancy Benjamin, a guest speaker and survivor of gender-based violence (GBV), shared her inspiring journey from victimhood to empowerment. Benjamin, now an entrepreneur, offered a powerful testimony of reclaiming her life and achieving independence.

Additional speakers included social workers from the Department of Social Development and Child Welfare South Africa (CWSA), who addressed critical issues such as GBV, substance abuse, and child protection procedures. The event underscored the importance of continued efforts to support and empower women.

Letitia Cunningham, the event’s master of ceremonies, demonstrated that women can excel in diverse roles, including as master of ceremonies.

A special thanks were extended to SASKO George for their contributions to the day’s success.

George Disaster Services extends assistance to Swartland Following Dam Burst

George Municipality Disaster Services have stepped up to assist the Swartland Municipality after the sudden dam burst in the Dassenberg and Riverlands communities outside Malmesbury, caused a significant disruption in the water supply. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, George’s emergency services have mobilized to deliver drinking water to affected communities.

On Monday, August 12, 2024, a team from George Municipality, including Firefighters Jeandre Bernardo and Brad Bussack, led by Chief Neels Barnard, were deployed to assist for an indeterminate period.

“George fire is serving the community,” stated Barnard, emphasizing the municipality’s dedication to providing support beyond its borders. A relief crew was also sent this morning, Friday 16 August, and is expected to provide assistance for the next five days, with the possibility of extending support for another week or two if necessary.

The dam burst has left the two communities without a reliable source of drinking water until repairs can be affected and George Municipality’s prompt response and collaboration with local officials in Swartland highlight the importance of inter-municipal cooperation in times of crisis.

Against all odds – Sharon Eland- Lewis’ Inspiring Journey to Publishing Her First Book

In the photo above i Sharon Eland-Lewis with her book, Slegs ‘n enkele kans.

Deaf, homeless and quite often in the night shelter, Sharon Eland-Lewis overcame pain, suffering and lots of trials and tribulations to get her first book, Slegs ‘n enkele kans, published. The book was published by The National Library of South Africa, an agency of the Department of Arts and Culture.

Sharon Lewis was raised by her grandparents, Johannes and Johanna Eland, in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape where she completed her matric at Acadia High.

She married in Mossel Bay and had two children.

She walked out of her marriage after her husband became abusive towards her and left her two children in the care of her mother.

After moving to George, she found herself on the streets, homeless and quite often in the night shelter. After becoming fatally ill with MDR TB, she fell into a coma and had kidney failure. Bedridden and deaf, she regained consciousness in the Harry Comay hospital in George.

Her urge, passion and love for the written word drove her to write numerous poems which was published in the George Herald. After numerous inquiries from the public, journalist Michelle Pienaar introduced Sharon to Jeff, the owner of Three Chameleons clubhouse, where she became part of a book club.

After finding a place of her own, Sharon started to write with all eagerness.

Sharon’s book will be launched at George Library on the 21st August 2024 at 11am. The book is also selected for the Funda Mzantsi Reading Competition, Afrikaans language, which will be held in George from the 23rd-27 September 2024.

Sharon Eland-Lewis was placed on the agenda of a portfolio committee meeting during 2017 when the Library Department announced that the staff of library service, that is Rachel Williams (Manager:George Libraries), Hazel Springfield and Eurogine Carolus  assisted her with the book by typing the whole publication for her when she approached them for assistance. James de Waal assisted with the proofreading of the book. Rachel Williams contacted Zanele Nikani, the Project Facilitator of the Community Programme at the Publishing National Library of South Africa. Ms Nikani arranged publishing (using the Community Publishing Grant), professional editing and proofreading for the publication. Well-known writer and poet Diana Ferrus assisted with further editing and proofreading of the manuscript. As Sharon is deaf, all correspondence to and from the National Library came through the office of the Library Manager. Although Sharon is vulnerable, extremely poor and a shack dweller, she is a very passionate library patron.

Sharon expressed her heartfelt thanks to the George Municipality, the George Library staff and everyone that assisted her on her journey. She listed all the people she wanted to thank in the book.

George Municipality Unveils Gym Trims at Thembalethu Stadium and Thusong Centre

In the photo: Caption 1 – Thembalethu Sportsfield Gym Trim – Executive Mayor Jackie Von Brandis tested out the new Gym Trim equipment together with from left Cllr Thandiswa Qatana, Lynette Groenewald (Senior Spatial Planner), Ward 13 Cllr Simphiwe Toto, MMC for Community Development, Melvin Roelfse, MMC for Community Services: Parks, Refuse and Environment Marchelle Kleynhans, Granville Campher(Manager Sport Development) and Henko Lourens (Spatial Planner).

George Municipality officially opened the fully-fledged gym trims installed at Thembalethu Stadium and the Thusong Centre which form a part of Project 7: Recreation Route, one of the eleven Investment Packages identified to enhance social and economic development in Thembalethu as a part of the Ilisolethu Precinct. The gym equipment, consisting of 10 machines, litter bins and benches were installed at each site as part of this project

The rollout of outdoor gym equipment in George began in 2022 as a pilot project to observe its utilisation and in an effort to provide better health and wellness opportunities to people of all ages, abilities, and socio-economic statuses. Three Outdoor Gym Trim have previously been installed, one on Knysna Road and another one at the Corner of Mission and Fern Streets in Pacaltsdorp, and ERF 80 Van Riebeeck Gardens. Initially, it was anticipated that elderly people would benefit while children enjoyed the playpark equipment. However, it turned out that children also enjoy the gym equipment as it is user-friendly for both children and adults. – “Over the two years, we have noticed that children use the equipment more and we encourage adults to also make use of the equipment for their health and wellness,” said Nosidima Vumindaba, the George Municipality’s Parks and Recreation Manager.

The Neighbourhood Development Project Ilisolethu Framework Project 7: Recreation Route which will include a recreation route that will integrate the area through a 5km recreational route for Park Run events, supporting a weekend market facility, upgrading of the existing Thembalethu sports field and multifunctional public open space. The Gym Trim at the Thusong Centre will be fenced shortly.

Melvin Roelfse, MMC for Community Development noted that the Gym Trims will add value to the youth and contribute towards the wellness and well-being of the community. “Gym and sports bring people together and this will help to build and strengthen our communities. I encourage our community members of Thembalethu to use and enjoy this equipment, “ he said.

The outdoor gym equipment was installed in June at a cost of R453 200 and forms a part of the R74 million committed thus far to the Ilisolethu Precinct by the investment partners of the Municipality – including the Development Bank of South Africa and the National Treasury.

The Ilisolethu Project aims to promote social, economic, and residential development, and stimulate urban regeneration through investment projects. This initiative seeks to uplift the community of Thembalethu while creating a unique space for residents and visitors alike. Some key benefits of this project include socio-economic opportunity, fostering of human potential, and creating a better, more accessible space for communal interaction and usage. In partnership with the National Treasury, George Municipality has thus initiated the Thembalethu Node 1 Development Project to attract new investments and stimulate economic activity in the area. The appointed service provider, Cadre Connect, drafted an Investment Strategy, an Area Management Strategy and identified 11 Investment Project Packages. The aim is to roll out the project over a 5-year period, subject to the availability of funding and commitment from investment partners, and, once completed, this groundbreaking regeneration initiative will be a valuable asset to the community of Thembalethu and benefit the entire region.

As part of the Ilisolethu Precinct, eleven Investment Packages have been identified to enhance social and economic development in Thembalethu. One of these Investment Packages is known as Project 7: Recreation Route. The project seeks to address the expressed need for more recreation facilities within available vacant land. This includes the development of a 5km recreation route, gym parks, and a future weekend market area.

The Neighbourhood Development Project Ilisolethu Framework identified the upgrading of the sports field (Project 7) as part of the recreation route project. The original solid wall created a security risk as it was not visually permeable. Creating a safer precinct is one of the pillars of the Ilisolethu Project. Measures to screen the site during sports events are being considered. The importance of safety in the general area was echoed by teachers of the adjacent Imizamo Yethu Secondary School as well as the developers of the old clinic site and surrounds. The new fence includes a motorised vehicle access gate and two pedestrian gates to ensure sufficient, controlled sports field access.

This project cost R2.1 m, which forms part of the R74 million committed thus far to the Ilisolethu Precinct by the investment partners of the Municipality – including the Development Bank of South Africa and the National Treasury.

In the future, the sports field will see further upgrades including a pedestrian walkway, the construction of an Astroturf, and additional upgrades to increase functionality and enjoyment for all users.

George Municipality Advances Renewable Energy Projects to Enhance Energy Resilience

In the photo is the Civic Centre 300 kWp system which has been operational since September 2021

The George Municipality continues to pursue its vision to enhance energy resilience and reduce electricity demand through renewable energy initiatives. The primary goal of these projects is to meet some of the municipality’s energy requirements, thereby decreasing dependence on Eskom. According to the deputy director for Planning and Design in the George Municipality’s Electrotechnical Services, Daniel Greeff, this reduction in electricity purchases from Eskom will lower the municipality’s electricity bill, with the savings ultimately benefiting customers.

Completed Projects:
• Civic Centre: 300 kWp system, operational since September 2021.
• Outeniqua Wastewater Treatment Facility: 400-kilowatt peak (kWp) photovoltaic (PV) system.
• Gwaing Wastewater Treatment Facility: 500 kWp PV system.
• Municipal Land (ERF464): 1 megawatt peak (MWp) solar farm.

Ongoing Renewable Energy Projects:
• Tourism Site: Completed, with some equipment changes necessitated by a fire.
• Battery Storage System: 3 megawatt-hours (MWh) battery storage system spread across three sites (Civic Centre building, Outeniqua, and Gwaing wastewater treatment works), construction is expected to begin in September 2024.

Cancellation of Tender for 12 MW PV with 66kV Substation Grid Connection

The tender for the construction of the 12 MW PV Plant with the 66kV substation Grid connection was cancelled. According to Mr Riaan du Plessis, the Chief Financial Officer of the George Municipality, the bids received in response to the tender process far exceeded the available budget. “In terms of the Local Government Municipal Finance Management Act, 56 of 2003 (MFMA), a municipality may incur expenditure only in terms of an approved budget. Therefore, there was no alternative but to cancel the tender,” du Plessis said.

Future Plans and Initiatives

George Municipality intends to continue exploring alternative electricity supply solutions such as Small-Scale Embedded Energy Generation (SSEG) and Wheeling agreements. The municipality will also focus on procuring electricity from Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

George Municipality will work in collaboration with the Western Cape Premier’s office relating to the appointment of IPP’s, which is already coordinating similar solutions in the province. IPPs will create an effective competitive market space for ESKOM, moving away from the current monopoly. This is seen as the economic solution to the current energy crisis in South Africa, and George Municipality will support the Western Cape government in leading the necessary changes for a stable electricity supply future.
The municipality remains committed to finding sustainable solutions to the current electricity crisis, contributing to both local and national energy resilience.

Mayor of George Celebrates Skills Training Graduates

Above is the Thembalethu ihub.

Executive Mayor of George, Ald Jackie Von Brandis and Ward Councillor of Ward 9, Thembinkosi Lento, celebrated a significant milestone in community development by handing over certificates to beneficiaries who completed a short training course with Ululo Empowerment Technologies. The event marked the culmination of a project aimed at equipping local residents with valuable skills and initiative  spearheaded by Cllr Lento, who utilised Ward Committee funding for the training.

He approached the iHub in Thembalethu, where the centre manager, Sivuyo Ngcwangu, facilitated the connection with Ululo Empowerment Technologies. The Thembalethu ihub is situated next to the Thembalethu Thusong Centre.

The Ululo Empowerment Technologies company’s owner, a former trainee of the iHub facility in Nelson Mandela Bay, eagerly agreed to participate, seeing it as an opportunity to give back to the community that once supported her. Upon reaching an agreement, Cllr Lento nominated 110 residents from his Ward to participate in various short courses. The courses offered included Merchandising, Data Capturing, Basic and Advanced Computer Skills, and Office Administration, among others.

Expressing his pride, Cllr Lento highlighted the success of the programme: “Mayor, some of the graduates are not here today because they are at work. They used the skills that they learnt during their short course to gain employment!”

Mayor Von Brandis commended Cllr Lento for his dedication and innovative approach to community development. She praised the graduates for their commitment to self-improvement, stating, “I am ecstatic to be part of this initiative. You have shown that you are willing to put in the hard work, to make the sacrifice to better your circumstances. This certificate is the key to success, and my only request today is that this will be the first of many, many more achievements!”

Acknowledging the broader economic challenges, Mayor Von Brandis highlighted the significance of the programme’s success, noting that 50% of the graduates have already secured employment. She emphasised the goal of achieving at least one job per household to support families and improve living standards. She said by doing this we can deal a blow to the unemployment figure in the country.

Urhwebo e-Transand grades emergency airstrip

George Fire Chief Neels Barnard had high praise and special thanks for Urhwebo e-Transand who recently graded and levelled the landing strip at the Denneoord Emergency Airbase at no cost to the municipality. The emergency airbase which was established in 2017 remains the Garden Route’s first dedicated emergency firefighting airstrip on municipal property.

Caption: Seen here standing on the newly levelled landing strip are from left, Lemar Meyer (Urhwebo e-Transand), Chief Fire Officer Neels Barnard, Sandisile Linton (Urhwebo e-Transand), Brandon van Rensburg (Urhwebo e-Transand) and Louw van de Merwe (Kishugu Pilot)

The airbase a collaborative project between George Municipality, Southern Cape Fire Protection Association, Working on Fire and Garden Route District Municipality has meant that firefighting planes can respond much faster than they would have been able if they were stationed at a commercial airport where they would have had to wait in line for a runway along with other aircraft. This is especially applicable during the summer fire season which coincides with the very busy holiday season when thousands of flights are scheduled at commercial airports.

Three fixed wing spotters, two fixed wing bombers and a chopper are stationed at the base during the fire season, and usually at least one plane and a chopper out of season. Municipalities in the Garden Route district use the facility on a call-out basis as services are required. The airbase consists of a runway, helipad, firebase, hangars, taxiways, and a water refilling point.
