ROTATIONAL SWITCH ON AFTER LOADSHEDDING – reduce power to avoid network tripping
Consumers are reminded to PLEASE use electricity sparingly after power returns. Please do not switch high-usage equipment on immediately after Load shedding.

Consumers are urged to turn off high-usage equipment and where possible to not switch on appliances such as stoves and kettles for at least 30 minutes after load shedding is scheduled to return. This will reduce the risk of overload tripping on the network.

Reporting power outages
Please do not phone the after-hours number or the Electrotechnical Department to report that you have no power immediately after load shedding is scheduled to be lifted. Please be aware of the rotational switching on i.e. areas are switched on one by one and not all at the same time to avoid overloading the system. Please wait at least 30 minutes before reporting no power. The Electrotechnical Directorate will be aware of a possible substation trip that needs to be sorted out.

Alien Invasive Plant Awareness Campaign – Oleander

Municipal Plant of the Month – Oleander: Nerium oleander

Municipal Plant of the Month – Oleander: Nerium oleander. This plant threatens the ecology of river valleys which is of particular concern in our dry country. Its robustness, resistance to disease, and tolerance to adverse soil and climatic conditions make it difficult to control. It is listed as a Category 1b invader and habitat transformer and must be removed and destroyed. Any form of trade or planting is strictly prohibited. Oleander is one of the most poisonous of commonly grown garden plants. All parts of the plant are extremely toxic and lethal, and the sap is a skin irritant.

Impact: Invades watercourses in the semi-arid areas of the Little Karoo and in Gauteng. The primary invader is the pink flowered variety – clearly evident along the Nels River outside Calitzdorp and the river valleys of the Kamanassie region.

Identification: The foliage is slender, leathery dark green leaves. Overall appearance is that of a large robust shrub (up to 6 m tall) with an abundance of pink, red or white flowers. The fruits are red-brown in colour, split length-wise when ripe exposing the seeds that have tufts of hair.

Control: The plant coppices when cut back, complicating control. No specific herbicide is registered for the control of this invader weed although there are herbicides that are registered for total weed control which could be used. However, great care needs to be taken with their use to avoid damage to other species. The tufted seeds are wind and water-dispersed, therefore recognising and weeding seedlings before they become too large is the best approach. Large plants need to be removed entirely.

Please don’t give money or handouts to individuals begging on the streets

We kindly request that you refrain from giving money or handouts to individuals, including both children and adults, who are begging on the streets.

The George Municipality urges the residents of George to be part of the solution for those living on the streets by directing their donations to reputable organizations like the George Night Shelter or Kidstop. This approach is far more effective than providing direct assistance to people begging at street intersections, which has become a growing concern.

Regrettably, providing money or handouts to individuals on the streets can perpetuate their homelessness and lead to negative long-term consequences.

If you wish to make a positive impact, you can get in touch with the following organizations:
• Freddy Trout, PASA (People Against Substance Abuse) at 068 487 4848.
• Jonathan Gelderbloem, YFC Kidstop at 044 874 2624/044 875 1794.
• Department of Social Services at 044 814 1920.
• Andre Olivier from Cremhog via email at andre.olivier1962@gmail.com

Please note that living on the streets is not a criminal offense, and individuals cannot be arrested or relocated without their consent. The responsibility to assist people living on the streets mainly falls under the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the National Department of Social Development.

George residents, business owners, and organizations interested in helping the homeless or sharing innovative ideas for their support are encouraged to participate in the monthly PLOTS meeting.

For more information, please contact Estelle Fredericks at 044 802 2000, extension 2015 during office hours.

• Freddy Trout, PASA (People Against Substance Abuse) by 068 487 4848.
• Jonathan Gelderbloem, YFC Kidstop by 044 874 2624/044 875 1794.
• Departement Maatskaplike Dienste by 044 814 1920.
• Andre Olivier van Cremhog via e-pos by andre.olivier1962@gmail.com

Vir meer inligting, kontak asseblief Estelle Fredericks by 044 802 2000, uitbreiding 2015 gedurende kantoorure.
