GEORGE MUNICIPALITY URGES MOTORISTS TO STAY OFF THE ROADS DURING PERIODS OF HEAVY RAINFALL
Issued by George Municipality 3 June 2026 at 07:40

George Municipality is urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to stay off the roads during periods of heavy rainfall today, Wednesday 3 June, and tomorrow, Thursday 4 June 2026, as severe weather conditions are expected to affect the municipal area.

The forecast rainfall may result in localised flooding of roads, low-water crossings and bridges, while rapidly rising water levels in streams and rivers could create dangerous driving conditions with little warning.

Motorists are reminded that road conditions can deteriorate rapidly during heavy rainfall, with water-covered roads concealing potholes, wash-aways and other hazards. Even shallow moving water can cause a vehicle to lose traction or be swept away.

Residents are therefore strongly advised to postpone non-essential travel and remain at home where possible during periods of intense rainfall.

ROAD SAFETY ADVICE
Motorists are urged to:
* Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall.
* Never drive through flooded roads, bridges or low-water crossings.
* Reduce speed and increase following distances.
* Keep headlights on and ensure vehicles are roadworthy.
* Follow all instructions issued by Traffic Services, emergency personnel and law enforcement officers.
* Be prepared for possible road closures and delays.

RESIDENTS IN FLOOD-PRONE AREAS
Residents living in low-lying or flood-prone areas should monitor conditions closely and move to higher ground if water levels begin to rise. Important documents, medication and valuables should be placed in waterproof containers and kept readily accessible.

STAY INFORMED
Residents are encouraged to monitor official weather updates and communications from George Municipality, the South African Weather Service and Disaster Management authorities.
The safety of residents remains the municipality’s highest priority. Municipal emergency services and response teams remain on high alert and will continue to monitor conditions throughout the severe weather period.
