George residents will soon note an increase in road works all over town, heralding wide-spread upgrading of roads used by the GO GEORGE bus service.

A list of George Integrated Public Transport Network infrastructure requirements was assessed by the National Department of Transport which subsequently allocated additional Public Transport National Grant funding for some of the projects needed to improve and expand GO GEORGE infrastructure. The upgrade projects will address several infrastructure categories approved by the George Municipal Council, starting with road rehabilitation in August.

First projects
Work on the following streets will start in August: Beer and O’Connell Streets in Rosemoor, Airway Road in Heather Park, and Protea Street in Pacaltsdorp. Work on the Wellington/Stockenström Street intersection started in July already.
Streets earmarked for rehabilitation were selected based on physical inspections to identify areas showing critical signs of deterioration.

Rehabilitation will entail reparation of severe crocodile cracking, structural failures and low points on roads where stormwater concentrates without catch pits, rightsizing of intersections, road re-alignments and kerbside improvements to conform with universal accessibility requirements.

Communication with passengers
According to Morné Lakay, GO GEORGE Manager, the communication team will constantly alert and update the public regarding planned roadworks that will impact the bus services. “From our side, we’ll do our best to keep passengers informed and to help them plan their trips according to the temporary deviations,” he said. “Whether rerouting or one-direction routing, the adjustments will be designed for the minimum inconvenience to passengers while allowing the construction teams to complete their work safely and on schedule. We call on our passengers to be patient and to focus on the outcome of safe and reliable roads for all road users in George.”

Eerste Projekte
Werk aan die volgende strate sal in Augustus begin: Beerstraat en O’Connellstraat in Rosemoor, Airwayweg in Heatherpark en Proteastraat in Pacaltsdorp. Werk aan die Wellington/Stockenströmstraat-kruising het reeds in Julie begin.
Strate wat vir rehabilitasie geoormerk is, is gekies op grond van fisiese inspeksies om gebiede te identifiseer wat kritieke tekens van agteruitgang toon.

Kommunikasie met passasiers
Volgens Morné Lakay, GO GEORGE-bestuurder, sal die kommunikasiespan die publiek voortdurend waarsku en op hoogte hou van beplande padwerke wat ‘n impak op die busdiens sal hê. “Van ons kant af sal ons ons bes doen om passasiers ingelig te hou en hulle te help om hul ritte volgens die tydelike afwykings te beplan,” het hy gesê. “Of dit nou herleiding van roetes of eenrigtingroetes is, die aanpassings sal ontwerp word vir die minimum ongerief vir passasiers, terwyl die konstruksiespanne hul werk veilig en volgens skedule kan voltooi.

N2 night-time lane closure at Pacaltsdorp Bridge and M12 exit in George

Western Cape, 5 August 2024 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) has announced that a night-time lane closure from 19h00 to 20h00 will be in place on the N2 at the Pacaltsdorp Bridge and the M12 exit onto the N2 in George on Tuesday, 6 August 2024.

These closures are required as part of the ongoing construction of the new bridge at the Thembalethu interchange across the N2.

“During the road closures, motorists will be diverted at the Pacaltsdorp Bridge and at the M12 exit onto the N2,” said Petronella Theron, SANRAL Project Manager.

SANRAL apologises for any inconvenience caused.

Of jy nou ‘n stroombreker omseil om ‘n ekstra verlengingskoord te laat loop of jou eie draad in ‘n elektriese boks inprop, ‘n onwettige verbinding is enige elektriese bedrading, toestel of toerusting wat op enige manier aan die munisipale elektriese netwerk gekoppel is om toegang te verkry tot elektrisiteit sonder toestemming en/of betaling. Omdat daar gewoonlik geen stroombrekers op onwettige verbindings is nie, kan die drade oorverhit en ‘n brand veroorsaak. Elektriese brande is gevaarlik en moet nie met water geblus word nie, want water gelei elektrisiteit, en jy kan geskok word.

Fire Safety Tips for Informal Structures

The following tips for fire safety in informal settlements as provided by the Western Cape Provincial Government:
* Make sure that all stoves are on a stable surface to prevent them from falling over
* Keep a bucket with water handy to extinguish small fires when they start.
* Make sure all candles are placed in a safe candleholder, away from burning material. Cut long candles in half to prevent it from falling over.
* Build dwellings at least 3m apart to prevent fires from spreading rapidly. The open space around the home must also be kept clear.
* Always have a bucket of sand nearby when using a paraffin appliance. Water will not put out a paraffin fire and can worsen matters by spreading the flames. Paraffin fires can only be extinguished using sand or a fire extinguisher.
* Ensure that there is enough ventilation when cooking food on open flames inside your dwelling.
* Discard cigarettes in a safe container and ensure they are completely put out.
* All open fires must be extinguished before you leave the area or go to sleep.
* Do not use a Gallie Blik or an open fire made in drums inside an informal structures or house.
* Never leave a brazing or coal fire overnight inside the house, as this could cause breathing difficulties.
* Take special care when using gas appliances to cook food. The cylinders must be in a good condition and tested regularly for any leaks that might cause a fire or an explosion
* Never lock your door from the inside using a padlock; instead, use a shooter/shifter for easy unlocking should a fire occur.
* Be aware of the dangers of illegal and faulty electrical connections. Any electrical connection must be installed by an accredited electrician
* Always keep roads and the access to dwellings clear so that emergency vehicles can move around easily.
* Do not prevent or disrupt emergency personnel when they attend to incidents, as they are there to save lives and prevent the destruction of property.

ILLEGAL CONNECTIONS – Life threatening and a fire hazard
Any unauthorised electrical connection is illegal and dangerous. Whether you’re bypassing a circuit breaker to run an extra extension cord or plugging your own wire into an electrical box, an illegal connection is any electrical wiring, device or equipment that is connected in any way to the municipal electrical network to access to obtain electricity without permission and/or payment. Because there are usually no circuit breakers on illegal connections, the wires can overheat and cause a fire. Electrical fires are dangerous and should not be extinguished with water, because water conducts electricity, and you can be shocked.

REPAIRS TO ROAD SLIP FAILURES ALONG WHITES ROAD, WILDERNESS

DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this Contract is to repair two road slip failures along Whites Road, Wilderness. The works comprises of the installation of retaining structures and repairs to the roadway and drainage system

PROJECT PERIOD
• PHASE 1: 5 – 30 AUGUST 2024 (FULL ROAD CLOSURE)
• PHASE 2: 02 SEPTEMBER 2024 TILL 04 OCTOBER 2024 (STOP & GO SYSTEM)

SERVICE DISRUPTION
No Municipal services will be affected. Road lane closures will be implemented along the affected areas. The Contractor will liaise with affected residents in advance, to arrange local access where and when required.

WORKING HOURS
Working hours will be from 07h00 to 18h00 Mondays to Fridays, and potentially from
07h00 to 14h00 on Saturdays.

IMPACT
The construction area will be fully closed to the public. No pedestrians, runners or cyclists may access the construction area throughout the duration of the construction period.
Flag persons and temporary road signage must be adhered to at all times.

ACCESS TO SITE
Access to the construction site will be strictly controlled. No member of the public will be allowed access to the construction area, in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
