Buses rerouted during road upgrades in CJ Langenhoven Road
Buses rerouted during road upgrades in CJ Langenhoven Road
Issued Friday 5 August 2022
Planned construction activities on CJ Langenhoven Road during August and September 2022 will have an impact on GO GEORGE services. Hospital staff and visitors to George Hospital and Geneva Clinic will be impacted, amongst other bus users. Construction will commence on Thursday, 11 August.
The section to be upgraded is between George Hospital and York Street, with one lane open in each direction, allowing access to road users along this section of road. Since traffic congestion is expected, it was decided to reroute Route 2 Blanco-CBD via Davidson Street on its way from Blanco to the CBD. The rerouting will be from the hospital circle to the York Street circle, where the route will run along York Street and turn left into Hibernia Street on its normal route to the Transport Hub in Cradock Street.
Affected bus stops
Bus stop 346 Sports Club on the hospital side of the street behind George Hospital will be closed temporarily. Passengers who usually board the bus at this stop are advised to use stop 143 Hospital in Davidson Road.
The other two bus stops that will be closed temporarily are 144 Herrie and 587 Palm. Passengers disembarking at these stops will now be deviated via Davidson and York Streets to Hibernia Street, and those usually boarding at these stops will now have to board at stop 313 York D in Hibernia Street.
Passengers who need assistance with planning their trips are welcome to phone the GO GEORGE Call Centre on 0800 044 044 or send an email to info@gogeorge.org.za.
CAPTION:
Three bus stops in CJ Langenhoven Road will be closed temporarily during the planned roadworks.
Busse herlei tydens padopgraderings in CJ Langenhovenweg
Uitgereik Vrydag 5 Augustus 2022

George municipal officials and councillors support women’s rights
Issued by George Municipality 2 August 2022
George municipal officials and councillors gathered at the back of the George Municipal main building in support of the Western Cape government that called on all in the province to show their commitment to an equitable society where women are celebrated, are safe, and are at the forefront of social change. The officials and councillors showed their support and solidarity against the attacks against people, especially women, by forming human chains. Women were asked to dress in black on Monday, 1 August as homage was paid to the work done by many great women, and the ongoing efforts toward the achievement of a safe, free and fair society. Women’s Day in South Africa, traditionally celebrates the staged march by women to the Union Building on 9 August 1956. It celebrates the strength and resilience of women who laid the foundations of a democratic South Africa, and the strides made toward gender equality. More recently, it has become an important period to reflect on the progress made toward the promotion of women’s rights and the elimination of injustices against women.

GEYSER SWITCH-OFF TIMES
GEYSER SWITCH-OFF TIMES
Issued by George Municipality 14 July 2022
The George Municipality switches off geysers according to the Eskom tariff structure peak times.
September to May (Low demand season)
Monday to Friday: 8am-10am and 6pm-8pm
Saturday: 10am-12pm and 6pm-8pm
Sunday: No switch-off
June to August (High demand season)
Monday to Friday: 7am-9am and 5pm-7pm
Saturday: 10am-12pm and 6pm-8pm
Sunday: No switch-off
As per government legislation all municipalities have been required to install geyser control systems to help flatten the peaks on the national load curve and this has been in place nationwide for about a decade. The geyser control system is intentionally set to switch geysers off during peak times as without it there would be more load shedding.
While most municipalities switch geysers off for three hours during the entire morning peak time, George switches off for two hours – an hour each in morning and evening peak times.
Due to the current load shedding and the excessive load that is encountered during certain times after the power returns, the automatic geyser system takes control and keeps the geysers off until the load reaches satisfactory levels. This normally takes about 30 to 45 minutes.

Public Notice: Streetlight Relay Switching affected by Loadshedding
Public Notice: Streetlight Relay Switching affected by Loadshedding
Re-issued George Mun, 11 July 2022
Challenges due to loadshedding
Members of the public have noted that after Loadshedding some streetlights remain on in George. Our streetlights are switched on and off via a Relay Automated System which is located in our central control room. This equipment has started taking strain with the persistent on and off of Loadshedding and the Electrotechnical Department is putting in additional processes to try and ensure that streetlights are switched off. It must also be noted that during Loadshedding we have experienced repeated theft of cable which affects the signalling at the Control Centre. Around 2000 of our streetlights have also been fitted with LED which use less energy, require less maintenance and have a longer lifespan compared to incandescent and other light types.
We appreciate the public taking the time to phone in to our division should they note that streetlights remain ON between hours 09h00 and 17h00, and remain OFF between hours 19h00 and 06h00.
Repairs on streetlights
Please note that in order to affect repairs on streetlights they need to be switched on so our teams can see which ones are not burning and it can happen sometimes that the automatic switchover function (that switches the lights off in the day) is not reactivated when the work is finished.
One electrical box usually serves a few streets, so while you may not see people working, they may just be where you cannot see them. However, teams would seldom work for more than a day in an area, except when a project is being rolled out or several lights are being installed or fixed. In general, if streetlights are burning during the day for more than a one-day cycle, please report it during office hours to 044 801 9222 or 044 874 3917 so that the department can go investigate.
Please phone in to report streetlights on during the day to 044 801 9222 or 044 801 9202 or on our WhatsApp Number 067 350 3295 (Available Monday to Friday 07h45 – 16h30)
